On Sunday, I finally finished writing the first draft of my novel. It’s definitely a mess, but I’m so happy. Plus, now I get to take a little writing vacation.

I’m excited for the editing process. I enjoy editing, and the process of making a created thing better by molding and shaping it. The only thing I don’t like about editing, is that it’s hard to edit your own work. Forest for the trees syndrome. But I have some new strategies I’m excited to try.

Now I need to celebrate….suggestions? πŸ˜€

  1. Awesome! Congrats! Yeah, it definitely helped me to have a few friends reading it too – they helped me see things that were confusing or things I could cut that weren’t as important (my rough draft was way too long!). But definitely celebrate! It is an accomplishment. πŸ™‚

  2. Gratz, Good Luck, I’m currently Pre-Editing My First Fantasy Novel, it is starting to become fun, but looking forward to Finishing it up with an Actual Editor… As Editing isn’t a Strength at this point for me.

      • Well, first I went through and Cleaned it up… Then My Friend does some Line Editing, which basically suggests some Grammar, and in some cases Story Clarity, but she’s not an actual Editor. But I am applying many things that she suggested. I call it Pre-Editing, only because we’re not Actual Editors, if that makes sense. I want to hire an Editor once I have a budget for it

  3. Congrats Shannon! That’s so exciting! Definitely take a moment to celebrate. If I were you, I’d treat myself to something special (a new book, dinner out, a bottle of wine, a celebratory cupcake . . .). You deserve it πŸ™‚ Good luck editing!

    • Thank you! I actually had a birthday party last night so i feel like i sort of pre celebrated. But i will probably decide on a celebatory something or other this week πŸ™‚

  4. Congrats to the max! I’m still wrestling with mine…trying to figure out where I’m going. I always have ice cream for my accomplishments but I think you need something more fantastic…

  5. Congratz!! πŸ™‚ Lol – and I know just what you mean. I do enjoy editing, but I feel like I’m blind to certain things in my own story, good or bad. As for celebrating – I don’t know about you, but I feel like dancing when I actually finish something, so I’d say grab some friends for a night of dancing and maybe even karaoke! And I also have a tradition of getting some chocolate coins too. πŸ™‚ Good luck on your editing process!

  6. Congrats!!! Enjoy that downtime and make sure to celebrate…a rough draft is a feat in itself!

I am just about to pick up the first rough draft of my own manuscript (I’ve set it down, as advised, for about a month) and can’t wait to start editing. It will still be a lot of work, but I think it will be easier (and perhaps more pleasurable) than the grueling first go of things!

Best of luck in your revisions, and looking forward to updates πŸ™‚
