Series Spotlight: Pretty Little Liars

By Sara Shepherd

I finally did it! I finished the Pretty Little Liars book series!

I read the first book when it came out way back in 2006 and sixteen books and eleven years later and I’ve finally finished the series!

I binge-read the last five books after I realized Sara Shepherd had finally wrapped the story up and that I actually had all the books in my possession. I have to say, if you’re thinking of starting the series, I think it’s a good time to become a Pretty Little Liars fan…it’s a lot easier to keep track of the story when you don’t have to wait between books and it’s not spread out over more than a decade.

Sixteen books was maybe a tad excessive though. I think the series could have been wrapped up much quicker than that. But. It is good, soapy fun and just like a daytime soap opera, you keep eating the books up like candy.

Yes, the story kind of wore thin over sixteen books and I was frequently required to suspend my disbelief at some of the situations the girls got themselves into and also A’s ability to really be that all-knowing, all-seeing. But Pretty Little Liars never promised to be highbrow literature, it only sought to entertain and in that it succeeded.

Pretty Little Liars is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I’m a little sad it’s over after following the story for over a decade. Good thing I still have the tv show to finish. And Sara Shepherd’s The Lying Game series to finish and her Amateurs and Heiresses series to start. I already know The Lying Game is more of the same, as was The Perfectionists. I hope the other two series follow in the footsteps of Pretty Little Liars. Because we all need a little soapy drama now and again!
