By Daniel H. Pink

The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers-creative and holistic “right-brain” thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn’t.

Drawing on research from around the world, Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others) outlines the six fundamentally human abilities that are absolute essentials for professional success and personal fulfillment–and reveals how to master them. A Whole New Mind takes readers to a daring new place, and a provocative and necessary new way of thinking about a future that’s already here.

This book was a continuation of an article I read in college that had the same premise as this book: creativity is staging a comeback.

All of the progress we’ve made and the abundance of items we have in the western world mean that our jobs are in danger of being lost to either a computer or people overseas who will do it for cheap. Anything that is logical and routine can be programmed into a computer to do.  But anything that is creative or requires problem solving, can’t be handled by computers.

Pink posits the idea that The Information Age is over and The Conceptual Age is upon us. And in order to succeed in The Conceptual Age, people need to cultivate six senses: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. In each section Pink includes specific examples of each sense as well as tips to cultivate it.

This was a fast, fun, and interesting read – definitely recommended!
