Death Rides in Autumn

Dakota Territory, 1878. Alchemist Lowell Cooper is a man on the run—from the law, his past, and a destiny he doesn’t want to accept. Though he can turn ordinary metal into gold, his creations crumble to dust after three days, leaving a trail of trouble behind him.

Lowell’s luck finally runs out in the mining town of Bringle Gulch, where something far worse than bounty hunters is waiting. When Lowell defeats one of the demons preying on the town, the sheriff offers him a deal: rid the town of its monsters, and he’ll erase the bounty on his head.

As Lowell wades into the fight, he finds the town offers more than a chance at a clean slate. For the first time in years, Lowell dares to imagine a life worth staying for—drawn to Becca, the widowed boardinghouse owner, and her young son, Seth.

But when the demons kidnap Seth and drag him into the darkness of a mine, Lowell learns there’s more at stake than one outlaw’s redemption: a war is coming, one that threatens not just Bringle Gulch but the survival of humanity itself. And the key to stopping it may lie in his magic and the fate he has spent a lifetime trying to escape.

“Love the chance to delve into music in space operas! If you like seeing the religious orders and hierarchies of books like Dune and want to tie in some ancient history allusions, check this one out. It’s a fun one-sitting read.”

“Frank Herbert meets Pierce Brown. Amazing prose meets modern dialogue in this gem of a Sci-Fi short by S.L. Fox.”
