Insurgent (Divergent #2) By Veronica Roth
One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris’s initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.
Read my review of Divergent here.
Since it’s been awhile since I read Divergent, I was a little confused when I jumped into Insurgent and had to Wiki the other book. But once I did I was ready to jump straight into the action.
This book is as fast-paced and un-putdownable as Divergent. There’s a lot of anger in this book. Tris’s anger over what she’s lost and what she stands to lose and the anger between factions as the war looms over them.
Tris and Four fight a lot in this novel. In a way, it was refreshing to see it. They are both strongheaded and passionate people, so of course they would fight. I’m glad this is a YA novel that isn’t afraid to show the darker, nastier side of relationships.
Tris definitely behaves extremely recklessly in this book and at times, you feel like slapping her. But she does eventually reach a point where she realizes that being brave and being Dauntless, is not the same as running head-first into danger and throwing your life away.
This book expanded the world of the Faction system in meaningful ways and we learned something very interesting about the origin of the Divergent world.
I’m starting Allegiant right away and can’t wait to finish off Roth’s series!
